Carbon Fixation in Elodea Lab Activity
Why does the phenol red change the color when we blow bubbles into the tube? Phenol red is an indicatior in this experiment. What did it indicate?
Changes color because carbon dioxide makes solution more acidic. Phenol Red indicates whether the solution is basic, acidic, or nuetral.
How long did it take to observe a color change in the phenol red? What does the color change indicate in terms of the elodea plant?
Took about 32 minutes. It was an orangish color. 11 Minutes later was more pinkish. That color change was indicating that the solution was going from acidic to nuetral to basic.
If carbon fixation occurs during the light independent stage of photosynthesis, why did the procedure call for placement of the test tubes under the grow lights?
The plants need extra energy that the light source provided.
Did you see a change in color of the phenol red test tube with no elodea added? Why or why not?
No color change because the carbon dioxide level wasnt absorbed so the solution stayed yellow.
Does carbon fixation occur in humans? Can you think of any other organisms that fix carbon?
I don't think that it does, I think the opposite happens in humans because our bodys clean the air we breathe in and dispel carbon dioxide.
How does a plant use carbon? What is meant by the term carbon fixation?
Plants use carbon for part of the photosynthesis conversion to produce glucose and oxygen. Carbon fixation is when a plant absorbs carbon from outside sources.
Identify and explain the control in this experiment, What is the purpose in having a control?
You need a control to have an original to compare your dependent variable to. The control was the test tube that contained the phenol red with carbon dioxide.

Initial Plant Research
California Bluebells:
flowers, Growing season: Early spring or late Fall, starts to germinate in about 8 to 10 days. doesn't really need special preparation but young plants need to be kept evenly moist, sporut -harvest, should be planted about 1 inches apart, soil requirements are dry soil thats easily drainable, young plants need to be kept evenly moist, it grows quickly and blooms plentifully but will die at first frost. Doesn't need much water as it is native to desert areas
Red Oakleaf Lettuce:
Vegetable, takes one to two weeks to germinate, keeping soil evenly moist, after 55 days should be mature, takes up about 8 inches which I see reasonable, the seeds should be planted about 1 inch from eachother, for this plant says keep soil evenly moist for good growth, good watering system is frequent short periods of watering but likes not to be overdrowned.
Arugula:
Vegetable, growing season is early spring but planting before first fall frost is okay too, takes 10-15 days to germinate, then about 50 days for harvest. should space seeds about i inch apart from eachother, they like rich soil but can live in many conditions, keeping moist will help buds that are slow, plikes ph of about 6
